"The Year of Living Dangerously" leaves a lot to be desired as a journalism drama set in times of foreign turmoil (see "The Killing Fields" for reference). But it's the love story where the gravity of this still beloved drama originates, and Linda Hunt's transformative supporting performance.

The turbulent backdrop of post-colonial Indonesia is meticulously realized and the main cast do fine as a motley crew of correspondents. However the meandering plot doesn't give them much to do but comment on the political turmoil happening all around. Only by the end do you feel as though you ought to be connected to or even concerned for these characters. If "The Year of Living Dangerously" has anything going for it, that's Linda Hunt's stellar debut as the wily Billy Kwan.

A typically beautifully shot Peter Weir film, this romance set to the backdrop of political upheaval in Indonesia is thoughtful, atmospheric and intelligent. When was the last time you could say that about a film starring Mel Gibson...?
