James Gunn successfully revives the granddaddy of superheroes in this sprawling and inspiring blockbuster. The casting of David Corensweat and Rachel Brosnahan was spot-on. The script is not afraid to be weird or outrageous, just like a comic book. Action scenes go way over-the-top and showcase not just Superman’s powers but also other heroes.

A fast-paced and fun rush of colors, sights, sounds, and comic book lore (lots and lots and LOTS of lore). James Gunn's "Superman" restores the bright and hopeful legacy behind the Man of Steel image while also getting the new DC shared universe off to a nice start.

Super, Eh!

The newest Superman movie done by James Gunn goes directly into the story of painting Superman/Clark Kent as more Human and flawed than past versions. I have been a fan of James Gunn's other Marvel/DC movies. ( All 3 of the Guardians were entertaining, His Suicide Squad was heeps better than the original David Ayer version, his highly underrated Super and Slither. Even his very early none superhero movie LolliLove was worth viewing. He has misfired with Brighburn but normally he keeps his films loose, fun and hip. I think this Superman lacks the depth of the Guardian movies and feels like he wasn't sure which way he wanted to present the new Superman. A decent lead performance but Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor was a bland listless villian. Definitely not nearing the Gene Hackman or …

Gunn Makes DC Super Again

I have been a big fan of James Gunn ever since Slither and the underrated subversive Super. He turned The Guardians of the Galaxy to household names and I much preferred his version of The Suicide Squad. He has a great way of incorporating humor and music along with emotion. After the very uneven DCEU with Zack Snyder trying his best to make things work (spoiler: it mostly did not), Gunn is now in charge of rebooting the other superhero universe and he gets off on the right foot with this new iteration of Superman.
I do realize that, yes, Peacemaker and the animated Creature Commandos did come first - and he is keeping some other previous DCEU things canon - but for the big screen, this is a huge first step. At first I wasn't sold on David Corenswet as the new man of steel, but I …
