Judging by movies like "Shame" and "12 Years a Slave," I'd never taken Sir Steve McQueen as a heartstrings puller. But what a pleasant surprise to see this side of him as a director, while still generating a real sense of danger and tension and showing WWII England from so many eye-opening new angles.
