The Blue People are #1 but Only the Studios Win

It's been confirmed that Avatar is the fastest-selling Blu-Ray release in history with 2.7 million copies sold since its April 22 release.

The total stands at $130 million in sales combined with DVDs. That's a lot of cheddar for an inferior copy. I wonder how many of these people are going to buy the special edition or the 3-D edition when it comes out.

I loved Avatar - if any filled …

Fond of Bond? You'll Have to Wait

Looks like Bond, James Bond, is a casualty of the current problems over at MGM. The mega-hit franchise has been put on indefinite hold while MGM looks for a buyer.

The latest Bond film was set for a 2011/2012 release, but now the future is in doubt. Star Daniel Craig is still confident the show will go on, just not sure when.

Maybe this is a good thing, while Casino Royale was a welcome …

Although it's only preliminary, reports say that Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, The Dollhouse) is in final negotiations to direct The Avengers - the film that would bring together all the Marvel heroes - Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk - into one film.

If this comes to fruition, it will bring together the man responsible for some of televisions greatest pop-culture …

The Force is Strong... with Laughter!

As the huge Star Wars fan I am, it's with great pleasure that it has been announced that Lucasfilm is teaming with the duo of Seth Green and Matthew Senreich (creators of Robot Chicken) on an animated comedy program.

Along with Daily Show writer Brendan Hay the program, most likely to appear on Cartoon Network (current location of the animated Star Wars: Clone Wars program), will feature …

A Critical Loss

For film critics and would-be critics alike it's a on a sad note that after 24 seasons, At the Movies is coming to a close.

The hit review show, started by popular duo Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert and later Roger Ebert and Richard Roeper is a victim of changing times. There is no doubt that Siskel and Ebert had a definite impact on the landscape of cinema. Whether glowing praise or scathing …

Release Me?

Chris Kavan - wrote on 03/22/10 at 10:40 AM CT

There was quite a stir recently when Disney announced they were going to release Alice in Wonderland on DVD a scant three months from premiere. Some theater chains pulled the film, irate over the fact that they thought people would skip the theatrical release and wait for the home version.

Yet Alice has dominated the box office since its release. Sure, the 3D aspect had a lot to do with its …

Read the Movie!

I love films. I love watching them - analyzing them - making fun of them - quoting them - good, bad, unknown, classics - I will watch just about anything at least once.

However, I also love to read. I'm much more selective about what I read than watch, but I've read a good share of books over my time. And, like most people would agree, the book is pretty much always better than the movie. …

Et tu Comedy?

It is a sad state of affairs how the once mighty parody has fallen. And don't get me started on the barrel-scraping that the National Lampoon name has resorted to.

I remember when parody films were actually funny. The days of Airplane! and Naked Gun. Slapstick and puns - visual gags that were actually well thought out. And Mel Brooks - Blazing Saddles, Spaceballs, heck even Men in Tights had …

Just Dip, Baby Dip

I noticed that one of the holy grails of Blu-Ray is coming out in early April - The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. If there was any series that deserves to be seen in full high-def glory it is surely the adventures of Frodo and crew.

Yet then my hopes were mercilessly crushed - because right there in the title it says "Theatrical Release". I already have the extended editions in DVD and if I'm …

Ad Nausea

Not to sound like a crotchety old man, but back in my day, when Douglas Theaters still owned all the theaters around town, I remember showing up to a movie on time, watching the "let's go out to the lobby-type intro to get you buy popcorn or gift certificates, sitting through two, maybe three trailers, and then BAM movie.

If I showed up early, I didn't mind sitting through the …
