It's going to be short and sweet this week, as there is only two releases of note - and both of them aren't going to be in theaters until 2016 (one may or may not actually make it to the theaters, but I digress). One is most likely going to be an award-season contender, the other is going to be decidedly not. This week we're looking ahead- a bit farther forward this time around, but, hey, at least we have something worth looking forward to... right?
First up is The Accountant - set in a prime awards-season spot... in 2016. The October 07 release stars Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, Jon Bernthal, J.K. Simmons, Jeffrey Tambor and John Lithgow. There are some movers and shaker here - Affleck is coming off big films like Argo and Gone Girl, Tambor has been reeving tons of accolades for Transparent and Simmons was a standout (and Best Supporting Actor Oscar winner) in Whiplash. That being said, there's not a lot to know about the film other than Gavin O'Connor (coming off the troubled shoot of Jane Got a Gun) is directing and the generic and short plot thus far is about a forensic accountant who helps some shady clients with un-cooking the books. It's, of course, a drama. It's pretty much too early to say exactly how it's going to stand up next year - but it has earned an R rating for strong violence and language throughout. Who knew accounting could be so interesting?
The other 2016 rating release of note is Extraction. Although it does not currently have a release date set for next year, considering it stars Bruce Willis, Kellan Lutz, Gina Carano and D.B. Sweeney - I'm guessing there's a better-than-average chance it will have a theatrical release. The film concerns a former CIA agent who is kidnapped by a terrorist organization. When his son learns there is no plan to rescue him, he takes it upon himself to come up with a plan and get his father back on his own. It sounds a bit flavor-of-the-week for me - a solid streaming pick, but nothing else. Extraction earns an R rating for violence, language throughout and brief sexual content/nudity.
