Why, hello again! It's that time of week when we get to see what crumbs the MPAA has thrown at us and in this case we get a treat - Marvel's NEXT BIG THING that doesn't look anything like a Marvel movie as well as a secretive horror film not coming out until next year. Otherwise, it's all leftovers and delivery - it will fill you up, but leave you feeling a bit empty. Anyway, at least we have a couple things to discuss, so let's begin.
I am torn as to whether the upcoming Doctor Strange is going to be an amazing film for doing something different in the Marvel pantheon or going to be a huge disappointment for doing something too different in the Marvel Pantheon. Every preview I have seen makes things even, well, stranger than the last. For some reason it reminds me a lot of Inception combined with The Matrix combined with The Dark Knight. At least the cast is shaping up to be memorable - Benedict Cumberbatch plays the good doctor, Tilda Swinton (who caught flak for not casting an Asian in the role) as The Ancient One, Mads Mikkelsen as the villains, Kaecilius, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Karl Mordo along with Rachel McAdams, Scott Adkins, Michael Stuhlbarg and Benedict Wong. Seems like a winning combination but I just don't know how audiences are going to react to such a... unique Marvel film. Granted, they took a chance with the original Iron Man - and it paid off, as did the more offbeat Guardians of the Galaxy. I would say the film will turn out just find, but I'm still interested to see the results - I'll be there opening weekend I'm sure. Rated PG-13 for sci-fi violence and action throughout, and an intense crash sequence.
The next film is going to get a wide release next February, but I have to say there is not a lot of information yet on the upcoming horror film A Cure for Wellness. It stars Jason Isaacs, Dane DeHaan, Mia Goth, Celia Imrie and Carl Lumbly (among others). The plot (supposedly) is about an employee (DeHaan) looking into the whereabouts of his boss at a wellness spa run by Isaacs, who, of course, has some dark designs for his patients. Goth plays one of these patients. The film is an American-German collaboration (partly filmed at Castle Hohenzollern in Germany) and is billed as a supernatural horror. It's directed by Gore Verbinski (mostly known for the Pirates of the Caribbean movies - though at one time he was attached to do a live-action version of the excellent BioShock, before studios backed off), so we'll see how he does with a horror theme... and maybe we'll be able to get that BioShock film adapted some day. They're not pulling any punches, getting an R for disturbing violent content and images, sexual content including an assault, graphic nudity, and language.
