While the list looks pretty impressive this week, what's not so impressive is that there is exactly one wide-release among them. It's an ensemble female comedy that seems exactly like a gender-flipped version of the dark 1998 comedy Very Bad Things. In any case, Rough Night follows a bachelorette party that quickly gets out of hand when a male stripper winds up dead. Granted, I'm guessing it's not going to wind up as dark, but at least the cast looks solid. Besides that, though, it's a wasteland, so here's hoping for a better report next week.
Scarlett Johansson could probably use a good laugh after the unfortunate under-performance of Ghost in the Shell. Good thing there looks to be plenty to look forward to with Rough Night. The comedy features Johansson as the bride-to-be who reunites with a group of college friends after a decade in order to celebrate her impending nuptials. The supporting cast looks great - Kate McKinnon, Zoƫ Kravitz, Jillian Bell, Ilana Glazer, Demi Moore, Ty Burrell, Hasan Minhaj and Colton Haynes help round out a cast featuring plenty of comedic talent. Director Lucia Aniello is also no stranger to comedy, having directed several episodes of Broad City and the mini-series Time Traveling Bong (really, it was pretty funny - in a stoner kind of way). A talented female cast paired with a talented female director? Heck, if Wonder Woman is any indication, 2017 is going to be a banner year for women - in front of and behind the camera. We'll see if Rough Night has the same success. Rated R for crude sexual content, language throughout, drug use and brief bloody images.
That's it for this week - sorry I couldn't talk about more, but I can only provide what I am given. If you are so inclined, feel free to check out the full MPAA Bulletin below:
