And the dominoes keeps falling. As many have predicted, Disney has decided to pull Soul, their next Pixar film, from theatrical release and will instead debut it on Disney+ (for free) in December. Now that Soul is off the table it leaves Wonder Woman 1984 as the lone "blockbuster" title still coming out in 2020 - and not until December itself. Meanwhile, Eddie Murphy's Coming 2 America has reportedly been sold to Amazon and the remake of The Witches will go to HBO Max on October 22nd. Meanwhile, while AMC has not closed its theaters, it is facing massive crunch - down 85% compared to 2019 (no surprise) and could run out of money by the end of 2020 and though CEO Adam Aron says bankruptcy is not on the table - a few more months could change things.
With the bad news out of the way, there is one film with a wide release getting a ratings due - a female-driven spy caper that looks all sorts of fun in The 355. Otherwise, it's your general mix of limited releases and such.
While there is some stigma assigned to films that are female-driven, the good thing is that the upcoming film, The 355 looks more like Ocean's 8 and less like the Ghostbusters reboot. The film stars Jessica Chastain as an unconventional CIA agent Mason "Mace" Brown - who is hot on the trail of top-secret weapon that has fallen into mercenary hands. In order to track it down, she will have to join forces with rival German agent Marie (Diane Kruger), a former MI6 alley and tech wizard Khadijah (Lupita Nyong'o) and the very skilled Colombian psychologist Graciela (Penélope Cruz). Meanwhile the a mysterious woman, Lin Mi Sheng (Bingbing Fan) is tracking their every move from the shadows. The globe-trotting action will take them from markets of Morocco to the elegant Paris to the high-end society of Shanghai. The film also stars Sebastian Stan (the Winter Soldier himself), Edgar Ramírez, Jason Wong and Evie Wray. This is a kick-ass cast and looks decent. Screw Charlie's Angels - these are the spies you're looking for. Rated PG-13 for sequences of strong violence, brief strong language and suggestive material.
