Last week Skyfall delivered a huge boost to the box office. It seems after a longer-than-average four-year wait, audiences were more than happy to welcome 007 back to the big screen. This week, a movie that made some big waves in limited debut opens nationwide and a franchise that's a big hit with tweens, teens and, yes, even many adults, finally comes to end and all signs point to a monster opening. With these three movies coming together, I have a feeling we're looking at another huge weekend.
LINCOLN Last weekend Lincoln opened in limited release in just 11 theaters and still managed to 15th place $944,308, for a per-theater average of a whopping $85,846. Now, huge limited openings don't always translate to wide audience acceptance, but considering this is Steven Spielberg directing, and Daniel Day-Lewis earning raves as playing Lincoln, I have a feeling this will be a decent hit - especially with older audiences. While the younger generation has Bond and Twilight, adults will gravitate towards this film. I have a feeling it won't be able to top Bond, but it should still have a good numbers and with the Oscars inching ever closer, it should enjoy a decent run up to the awards. I know it's the film opening this weekend I'm most looking forward to watching.
With two huge films opening, and another that should have a great second weekend, the box office should easily top the numbers from last year. The question remains just how big those numbers will be. Stay tuned until Sunday when we'll find out.
