After a few bang-up weeks at the box office, we're heading into a quiet weekend with just two new wide- release openings (one of which is a 3D re-release). I have a feeling that the top movies are going to look much the same as last week and there won't be much excitement for audiences this time around. I have been proven wrong in the past - but I'm comfortable with my predictions.
JURASSIC PARK 3D Another year - another 3D re-release. This tactic may not always lead to the best results - but the fact remains it's a relatively inexpensive way for studios to make more money off of already-popular properties as Titanic and Star Wars prove. Jurassic Park already has $357 million and it one of Speilberg's most well-known properties (Jurassic Park IV is still on schedule for a 2014 release) so I can see why it's getting the 3D treatment. I still think the idea of 3D re-releasing is abhorrent - but let's face it - it's a low-risk proposition. Even if it doesn't capture much of an audience, it doesn't have to make that much to make this venture profitable. As long as there is money to be had in 3D conversions - we're sure to see more of them.
I have a feeling the Joes and the Croods will still be at the top of the box office. Depending on how horror fans are feeling - Evil Dead has a chance to make the biggest waves, but considering how fickle that particular audience can be - those waves could be big or small. See you on Sunday with the gory details.
