More of a brawl than a ballet

This “John Wick” spinoff has just enough style and bloodshed to skirt by. The plot is at first intriguing and sets up a tantalizing mystery.
But halfway through the story, it gets distracted and murky. Almost like a first-person shooter game that has a lot of sidequest options.
Luckily the third section boasts some thrilling action scenes with some brutal kills. Even in its opening act, it has a few killer set-pieces. The highlight being set at a nightclub (true to form for John Wick).
Ana de Armas is fine as Eve, the title assassin we’re following. She’s convincing as she engages in grueling fights with a vast assortment of antagonists. Speaking of whom, Gabriel Byrne is pretty much forgettable as the primary villain.
And yes, Keanu Reeves does show up for a few scenes. But I’d be lying if I said that didn’t feel like superfluous padding to stretch this to two hours.
Len Wiseman lends more creativity to the direction of the action scenes than I suspected. Story issues notwithstanding.
