Prelude to a Kiss

Last post on 12/31/11 at 12:51 AM CT by Tammy

I liked the way this flick can intimately portray both the wonderful retardation of new love (without the standard, overdone, graphic sex scene) and the very private dance of despair and disillusionment.  Homophobic men will not be fond of this flick, I know.  Generally, I'd say it's a chick flick.

Elysium

Last post on 12/30/11 at 05:17 PM CT by Chris Kavan

It almost comes out on my birthday (in 2013) - but it's so far out, the release date could be moved up. I have faith - Blomkamp really was a breath of fresh air - I hear he's going to continue the District 9 in sequels down the line (though Elysium is apparently an original idea and not part of that story). I'm interested to see what he can do - with Hollywood continuing to churn out mass amounts of sequels and reboots, I like people who can come up with something original.

Mr. Popper's Penguins

The last movie I saw Jim Carrey in was Yes Man - which is a pretty mediocre comedy all-around (even if it is one of the few films to feature good old Nebraska). His choices recently seem all over the place: I Love You Phillip Morris is decidedly different from A Christmas Carol. And the less said about The Number 23, the better. He's very inconsistent - I have nothing against him personally, but I don't understand his process for choosing roles anymore.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)

Last post on 12/24/11 at 05:47 PM CT by Unknown

I had never read the books, or watched the original films, but I genuinely enjoyed this film.  I think that most other film fans will appreciate it and most of the mainstream audience will be turned off.  There isn't really a middle ground with this kind of movie.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1

@jutincamp  Funny you say that, because I never saw one good review for this film.  The only people who would say anything positive about this are the fans.

Swades ( Swades: We, the People )

swades looks lengthy. but it is heart touching, nicely performed with great music.

Kites ( Brett Ratner Presents Kites: The Remix )

kites , is a worst movie for hrithik roshan. he can improve his skills, by takign wiser scripts.

Double Dhamaal

double dhamaal may not be dhamaal. but it is neat comedy movie. Story is normal, but the screenplay is witty and interesting.

Killer Elite (2011)

Last post on 12/21/11 at 10:43 PM CT by sreekirch

“May the best man live”, as the
tagline in the movie, gives the fact that there are going to be a lot of
killings and assassinations. Killer Elite is directed by, Gary Mckendry, an Oscar
nominee, who is famous for taking Irish movies. Now he brings killer elite,
based on the novel “The Feather Men” by Sir Ranulph Fiennes. With writing work
from Matt Sherring, and based on the original novel adaptation, the movie stars
Robert de niro and Jason Statham in the main leads. This movie …

Haunted Poland ( Nawiedzona Polska )

This is a great film for found footage lovers. It's no so much "found", but a tape of a couple with their documented trip to Poland, from the sex to the horror...

The Phantom of the Opera (1925)

Last post on 12/06/11 at 12:37 PM CT by Chris Kavan

I've been meaning to address a gap in my filmic experience up to this point: I really need to see some silent classics. I will have to add this to my list - along with Metropolis and Nosferatu.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol

Last post on 11/30/11 at 11:03 PM CT by Unknown

If you think about it, all of the Mission Impossible films are over-the-top action.  None of the action in them is grounded in reality, yet we accept it as part of the story because it's all meant as the usual escapism.  And generally with sequels, the action gets bigger anyway.

Hugo

Tomorrow! 11-23-11 for those not only a daily schedule. I'm still not sure if Scorsese can pull off "whimsical" - just between you, me and anyone reading this post - I'd rather watch The Muppets.

The Artist

Last post on 11/22/11 at 02:43 PM CT by Chris Kavan

It's a movie about Hollywood and it's in black & white - no wonder it's getting raves! Critically, this looks to be one of the front-runners come Oscar night - personally, it doesn't look to be up my alley.

Melancholia (2011)

I think this looks really good. I am not exactly sure what it is about but I have high hopes for it. Maybe it will spark some Oscar interest.

War Horse

Looks like it comes out next week. Haven't seen much on it. I know it premiered to good reviews but I don't have any hope for it.

Passchendaele

It's unfortunate, being a Canadian and from Calgary, that a movie that involves us Canadians and starts out from Calgary, AB was so 'cheesy'.  Grenade goes off... soldier cartwheels out of the scene???  What?  The story line was good, but the terrible special affects were so distracting.  Every 10mins I was distracted by the poor special affects.  It definately took away from what I'm sure was a decent story.

The Thing (2011)

Last post on 10/15/11 at 01:35 PM CT by Chris Kavan

They need to get the atmosphere right - if they mess up that paranoia-induced horror that permeates John Carpenter's version, I just don't see it working.

Abduction (2011)

Last post on 10/04/11 at 11:59 PM CT by LeeAnn M.

Movie trailers are supposed to entice the public into spending time and money in watching the movie the trailer is trying to sell. There was nothing in the trailer for this movie that suggested it was original entertainment. Perhaps I will catch it on Redbox on a rainy day when I have nothing better to do.

Drive (2011)

Last post on 09/23/11 at 12:59 AM CT by

Hi, I saw Drive on Friday I believe it was. In my opinion it was very well done. I thought that it was going to be good before I saw it so I can't say I was surprised. The acting is really great, led by Ryan Gosling, and the music is also very good in my opinion. As it has been said again and again Gosling is one of the best, if not the best actors of his generation and I completely agree with that.

The Dark Knight

Was I the only one annoyed by the unnecessary vacuum noise throughout the majority of the movie?  Vacuum cleaners do not build suspense in my book, they build irritation.  This movie was good but not great.  I am surprised it's still considered so popular.  I personally prefer Batman Begins, which does make my top 50.

J. Edgar

I think that Gran Torino kind of sucked, but that is just my opinion. Here is my review. Gran Torino (2008)Clint, you can't sing, and your cast can't act!1.5/4 starsOne of the worst acted movies I saw from 2008. Clint Eastwood must have told his fellow cast member's to not act, to make him stand out more. Why were they so baaad at acting. Wow.

The plot is pretty standard, predictable and not really worth a damn. The only character I cared about was Clint Eastwood and the girl that really …

The Help

Last post on 09/12/11 at 08:53 PM CT by Movie Maven

This movie was unbelievable. I never had the opportunity to read the book and originally I had no interest in seeing the movie either. However, a friend of mine said that it was incredible and had the ability to make anyone laugh and cry all at the same time. I went with my sister and mother and wow did I cry most of the time. The actors really brought these characters of household help/ caregivers to life. It was just so moving.
