Drive-Away Dolls

Corny Titillation and Mediocre Comedy
Chris Kavan - wrote on 09/17/24

A film that's campy and raunchy in equal measure with a wild-accented, promiscuous lesbian Jamie - Margaret Qualley doing her best (maybe trying a bit TOO hard) and the straight-laced lesbian Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan) on a road trip to Tallahassee, Florida but in car they aren't supposed to be driving. Joey Slotnick and C.J. Wilson are the goons on their trail - with their boss (Colman Domingo) trying to hold things together. Beanie Feldstein plays a jilted ex with Pedro Pascal, Matt Damon and even an uncredited Miley Cyrus showing up for bit parts. The film is by one-half of the Coen brothers (Ethan in this case) can't capture the same magic as the two of them together. If you don't take the movie too seriously it's fun - but with little character development and trying too hard for laughs that just aren't there - along with a soft-core middle school take on lesbian relationships - it hits more wrong notes than right.
