All I know is that when your characters are scarier with their masks off - that's some good practical effects right there. I don't know that it was about killer haunted house movies around this time but all of them were entertaining in their own way. Haunt is a grimy, twisted tale even if you want to slap everyone upside the head for being as horror-movie dumb as they are wont to be. The ending was a bit much as well but if you like a bit of creepy-tinged Halloween-themed horror, give it a go.
