2013 Summer Movie Preview
Chris Kavan - wrote on 04/27/13 at 05:00 PM CT
With Iron Man 3 premiering in less than a week now, we are about to enter the anticipated summer movie season. And this year we have no shortage of films that look to bank some serious cash - and, according to my list - most of them aren't even sequels! But don't worry - there are plenty of those to go around too. Here is my personal list for the movies I think will be worth watching in the …
New in Theaters April 26: Pain and Gain, The Big Wedding, Mud

Although Oblivion didn't open as highly as I was anticipating (nor was it as interesting as I'd hoped) it still made for one of the better opening for 2013. This week as April draws to a close with have a muscle-bound action/comedy, a straight-up comedy aimed at adults and limited release that has been getting a lot of buzz and should find a nice audience. Oblivion has a decent chance of keeping …

THIS WEEK'S MOVIE RELEASES:
"Gangster Squad," set in Los Angeles in 1949, loosely tells the story of an elite L.A.P.D. crime-fighting unit set up to combat the imminent takeover of L.A.'s streets by notorious mobster Mickey Cohen, who was slowly but surely becoming the kingpin of the city's dope, vice and gambling dens. He had the politicians and the police in his pockets, and it was up to …
Weekend Box Office: Oblivion Shoots to the Top
Chris Kavan - wrote on 04/21/13 at 10:56 PM CT
Although the overall box office was down 19% from the same weekend last year, there was at least one person who wound up with a smile this weekend. April is not going to go down as one of the best on record, but thanks to some decent hits (and debuts) overall the month is at least on par with last year's total. This weekend only saw one new wide-release, but it managed to rise to the top - …
My Take On the Best of the Best Movies Ever, Part Six - The Grand Finale
Chris Kavan - wrote on 04/20/13 at 09:56 PM CT
I thank everyone who has been following along on this adventure - whether you agree with me or not. Now I've finally reached the end - the final five films. Out of every Academy Award-winning Best Picture film I have seen, these are the ones I feel are most worthy. This is where my personal and professional opinion come together. If you only watch five movies in your lifetime - these are …
New in Theaters April 19: Oblivion, Lords of Salem

Will this be the weekend that 2013 has its first blockbuster? That word is thrown around quite often and although Oz the Great and Powerful has made over $220 million the year still hasn't seen a monster opening - but all that could easily change this weekend. With big names and a budget to match, there is lot riding on this weekend jump-starting what looks to be a busy summer movie season. Will …
New on DVD and Blu-ray Week of April 16 -- April 22

THIS WEEK'S MOVIE RELEASE:
"Django Unchained":
Quentin Tarantino's follow-up to his 2009 revisionist WWII action film "Inglourious Basterds" has all the director's trademark touches: an wild story line, lots of graphic violence, an overabundance of swear words, and an off-kilter view of human nature. It's a Western of epic proportions, running almost three hours to tell it's involving story …
Weekend Box Office: 42 is a Grand Slam - Scary Movie 5 Runs on Franchise Fumes
Chris Kavan - wrote on 04/14/13 at 11:13 PM CT
The box office continued to perform well as a baseball biopic hit it out of the park even if a warmed-over franchise was given a mostly cold shoulder. With everything taken into account, the overall box office was pretty much on par with the same weekend last year. And things should consider to look up after Oblivion had a nice $61.1 foreign opening - a number that bodes well for its domestic …
My Take On the Best of the Best Movies Ever, Part Five
Chris Kavan - wrote on 04/13/13 at 07:29 AM CT
I've got the worst movies of all time out of the way - now it's time to turn to something with a bit more heft. Now we've reached the top 10 - out of all the Oscar-winning films I have seen up to this point in my life - these are the ones that mean the most. The ones that have had the biggest impact on me and on the cinematic landscape as a whole. If you haven't watched these films, I …
New in Theaters April 12: 42, Scary Movie 5, To the Wonder
Chris Kavan - wrote on 04/11/13 at 10:22 AM CT
Last week was one of the better weekends for 2013 thanks to the strong performance from Evil Dead and Jurassic Park 3D. This week we have two very different kinds of movies stepping up to the plate - one a biopic of a legendary sports figure the other is the latest entry in a long-running horror parody franchise. Will success follow or are we due for a lull this week until Tom Cruise comes to …
