My Take On the Best of the Best Movies Ever, Part One
Chris Kavan - wrote on 03/13/13 at 12:05 PM CT
They get things wrong as many times as they get things right, but whether you believe in the process or not, the Academy Awards are a decent indicator of what makes a great film. So I decided to list and rank every Best Picture award winner (that I have seen, of course) and see where they would wind up. Now, this is different than my favorite movies list - I took many things into account - but …

Screeners arrived late for this week's major releases, so herewith we offer one-minute synopses: In Life of Pi, a 16 year-old Indian boy's passage to a new life in America aboard a freighter ends in a shipwreck in the Pacific; he's left to fend for himself on a life raft where he forms an amazing and unexpected connection with the ship's only other survivor ... a …
Weekend Box Office: Oz Proves Great, Powerful and Finally Gives 2013 a Hit
Chris Kavan - wrote on 03/10/13 at 08:33 PM CT
Ding dong the box office blues are dead... at least for one weekend. Thanks to a fantasy spectacle, 2013 managed to beat the same weekend in 2012 by 7%. While that's not a huge victory - any victory is welcome given that out of the 30 films that have had wide releases in theaters this year - 16 of them have failed to hit the $10 million mark. Hopefully this will be the start of a trend and not a …
New in Theaters March 08: Oz the Great and Powerful, Dead Man Down

We're, what - nine weeks into 2013 this year? And almost every one of them has been worse than the same period when compared to 2012. Granted, things fluctuate and last year was (in my opinion) a very strong year for movies - but things are a bit sad right now. However, I have hope that we will finally have a certified winning weekend thanks to prequel to a classic that should provide the boost …

THIS WEEK'S PICKS:
"The Intouchables":
An irreverent, uplifting French comedy about friendship, trust and human possibility. Based on a true story about a wealthy, widowed, physically disabled ex-risk taker, the picture of established French nobility, whose world is turned upside down when he hires a young, good-humored, street-smart black African ex-con as his caretaker. Philippe, the …
Weekend Box Office: Jack Proves a Giant Disappointment
Chris Kavan - wrote on 03/04/13 at 12:59 AM CT
Chalk up another weak weekend for 2013. Despite having a diverse lineup of new offerings, the box office could only bring in $94.4 million - a 38% decline compared to last year. It has been a rough year so far and no CGI fairy tale, horror sequel or drunken shenanigans could provide the lift needed to turn things around.
1) JACK THE GIANT SLAYER
As predicted, though the CGI-heavy Jack …
New in Theaters March 01: Jack the Giant Slayer, 21 and Over, Last Exorcism II, Phantom

Oscar season is over - a lackluster February comes to a close - so now we are left with the question of whether March is going to start with a lion's roar or, like February, be as quiet as a lamb. Given the diverse nature of releases this week, we might have a winner, but I'm thinking that the real fireworks won't begin until next weekend.
JACK THE GIANT SLAYER Usually a big-budget CGI film …

THIS WEEK'S PICKS:
"The Master":
Shut out at the Academy Awards, Paul Thomas Anderson's follow-up to "There Will Be Blood" is another critical look at American culture, this time zeroing in on the cult of religion and heroes that filled the existential void left by the death and destruction (of people, ideologies and beliefs) wrought by World War II. It's a striking portrait of drifters and …
Weekend Box Office: Snitch Can't Top Identity Thief as February Fizzles Out
Chris Kavan - wrote on 02/24/13 at 09:31 PM CT
While many people were likely watching Oscar gold tonight - over the weekend not many people were watching new movies. February has been a slow month, and this weekend proved no exception with the total box office off 22% from the weekend last year. When a three-week-old comedy tops the box office, you know things are a bit stagnant.
1) IDENTITY THIEF
Although not many (including myself) …
Spending Money on Some Mondo, Cause I Got Mondo on My Mind
Chris Kavan - wrote on 02/22/13 at 08:37 PM CT
It has been quite a spell since I seriously considered buying a movie poster. One of my most prized possession is the Star Wars Episode 1 teaser poster I got through Star Wars Insider. The movie may have been a disappointment to fans, but seeing Jake Lloyd with the shadow of Darth Vader behind him was an excellent way to promote a return to Star Wars. Yet other than that poster, I really haven't …
