Weekend Box Office: Skyfall Once Again in First, Playing for Keeps Bombs

Although the movies may have switched a few places - the top five once again looked oh so familiar to those who have seen the box office over the past four weeks. While the winners keep on winning - the only new wide-release film couldn't attract an audience and couldn't even manage a top five debut.
1) SKYFALL
Skyfall becomes the first film since 2010's How to Train Your Dragon to take …
Iconic Role vs. Iconic Role: Let the Epic Movie Character Smackdown Begin!

I love stumbling upon random bits of news that gets my gears grinding in my head. Take this nice little tidbit: when Ian McKellen was on The Colbert Report (Stephen Colbert apparently being a huge fan of Middle Earth himself) and was asked by the host who would win in a fight: Gandalf the Grey or the mutant Magneto. The actor was pretty set on Gandalf:
""Gandalf is more powerful than …
New in Theaters December 07: Playing for Keeps, Hyde Park on the Hudson

In what's sure to be good news for the top five (or so) films from the last two weekends, it's looking like the one new wide-releases won't pose much of a threat to the box office. Not that I have anything against romantic comedies, but considering the time of year, I don't think there's going to be that big of an audience - those who prefer this kind of movie should seek out The Silver Linings …

"The Dark Knight Rises":
It's mea culpa time. When "The Dark Knight" first hit movie screens, I was so inundated with buzz as to how hot the film was -- and what a great turn Heath Ledger did as The Joker -- that somewhere in my anti-establishment mind set I prejudiced myself against Christopher Nolan's film. I was disappointed and underwhelmed by the story line -- though knocked out by the …
Weekend Box Office: Twilight, Skyfall, Lincoln - 1,2,3 for Third Straight Weekend

As I so rightfully predicted (though it wouldn't take a mind reader to do so) the top three films at the box office were the same as last week (and the week before that). In fact, the top six movies were the same as last weekend. Yet despite the familiar faces at the top of the box office, the overall top 12 movies still ran an impressive 46% ahead of the same weekend last year.
1) THE …
New in Theaters November 30: Killing Them Softly, The Collection

Two huge weekends have helped Hollywood to an exceptional November. Now, as we reach the end of the month things are slowing down. In fact, I have a feeling the top 3-5 movies are going to look very familiar, as there's no doubt in my mind the rather tepid offerings in the next few weeks will do little to change the face at the box office. That's good news for the films currently playing - but …
Too Early for 2013 Oscar Predictions? I Think Not
Chris Kavan - wrote on 11/28/12 at 02:12 PM CT
Here we are - November is coming to a close with December (and some huge movies) right around the corner. Now, a disclaimer, I haven' see every movie this year - including many that could be up for awards (or that haven't been released, obviously) but I have seen enough that I am willing to make my initial predictions on what films (and which actors) we're likely going to be seeing come awards …
New on DVD and Blu-ray Week of November 27

The first "Men in Black" (1997) was a mind-blowing affair, what with it's outrageous premise of a secret organization dedicated to policing alien activity on Earth, its then-state-of-the-art special effects, and its wry humor. "Men in Black II" (2002) tried to mine more of the first's box office gold and, though it tread the same territory, still was a fun outing. Ten years later stars Will …
Weekend Box Office: Twilight and Skyfall Lead the Way to Record Thanksgiving Returns
Chris Kavan - wrote on 11/25/12 at 07:44 PM CT
After a strong opening last week, it was once again The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2, along with fellow holdover Skyfall, that helped the box officer earn a record $206.7 million over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, easily topping the $175.2 million previous record set back in 2009.
1) THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN, PART 2
Through the five day holiday period, the Twilight …
New in Theaters November 21: Life of Pi, Rise of the Guardians, Red Dawn and Silver Linings

Welcome to a very special holiday edition of the the New in Theaters blog. Thanks to Thanksgiving landing on Thursday, pretty much all the major releases are coming out on Wednesday in order to take advantage of the holiday. It's too bad most people spend Thanksgiving indoors eating heartily, so I'm still thinking most of the big money is going to come in over the weekend anyway. I have a …
