Weekend Box Office: Thor Opens #1 but Falls Just Short of Mighty

Chris Kavan - wrote on 05/09/11 at 12:03 AM CT

In a result that should surprise no one, Thor opened in top spot for the weekend. And while the $66 million is impressive, it couldn't match the $86.2 million debut of Fast Five and in terms of super heroes, was behind the openings of Iron Man, Spider-Man and X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Still, Thor doesn't quite have quite the immediate recognition as Iron Man or the forthcoming Captain …

New Movies to Crave: Thor Declares "It's Hammer Time",

I have to admit after Fast Five gave a shot of adrenaline to the box office last week, I'm interested to see if Thor can also bring in some huge numbers.

1) So it's without a doubt that Thor take the top spot. Once again super hero franchise + special effects + 3D should equal box office gold. I'm over 3D at this point, but I have no problem watching it in good old regular dimensions. I admit …

New DVD and Blu-Ray Releases to Crave This Week: A Dilemma for The Green Hornet

Chris Kavan - wrote on 05/03/11 at 10:16 AM CT

After last week's yawner, it looks like we're back into the swing of things with some decent offerings.

1) I was skeptical when I heard about the casting but The Green Hornet looks like it turned out alright. While I'm not saying it's going to displace Dark Knight or even Iron Man for super hero superiority, I'm guessing spending an hour or so with Seth Rogan, Jay Chou, Cameron Diaz and …

Weekend Box Office: Fast Five Makes Competition Eat Its Dust

Chris Kavan - wrote on 05/01/11 at 10:37 PM CT

Audiences must have felt a real need for speed over the weekend as Fast Five raced to the biggest opening of 2011 and the best opening of any film opening in April.

With Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson and a whole slew of actors from the previous four films in the series, Fast Five debuted with a $83.6 million #1 opening. The last film to hold the record April opening? That would be …

New Movies to Crave: Getaway with Fast Five and Dylan Dog or Just Enjoy Prom

Chris Kavan - wrote on 04/29/11 at 09:53 AM CT

While I think technically summer season is going to start next week with Thor, I think Vin Diesel and crew are going to make their own mark this weekend and will overshadow all competition.

1) The first Fast and the Furious was a lot of fun - the next two sequels were not nearly as good. Then came the fourth film that revitalized the series for me. Now I hope they keep things in high gear for …

New DVD and Blu-Ray Releases to Crave This Week: Blow Out with 3 Idiots

Chris Kavan - wrote on 04/26/11 at 11:16 AM CT

Hollywood must be taking a breather this week, as I can honestly say this is the first time I've seen a week with no major films being released. That's not to say there aren't some great entries, just some that would be below the radar.

1) While it's not a new film, the Criterion release of Blow Out gives Brian De Palma (and John Travolta) fans reason to be happy. Combining parts of …

Weekend Box Office: Rio Fends Off Madea, Elephants to Retain #1 Spot

Chris Kavan - wrote on 04/25/11 at 01:22 AM CT

Although the competition had some fight in them, the animated Rio held on to its #1 spot over the Easter weekend.

With a hefty amount of 3D screens helping out, Rio made $26.8 million - 57% coming from said 3D screenings. The animated bird, while falling short of last years How to Train Your Dragon is doing better than both Rango and Hop in the same time frame with a $81.3 million total …

New Movies to Crave: A Hydrated Pachyderm, Madea's Family and Spurlock Sells Out

It's not joke that 2011 has been disappointing to Hollywood but last week finally saw a win in year-to-year ticket sales. Can Tyler Perry and a budding romance continue the trend? I have to admit, both movies with new wide-release dates hold little interest for me, but perhaps they can draw in the right crowd to keep the ball rolling.

1) Pom Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold - …

New DVD and Blu-Ray Releases to Crave: A King Speaking, Gulliver Traveling, Down the Rabbit Hole

Chris Kavan - wrote on 04/19/11 at 10:40 AM CT

A bit of high and lowbrow for your pleasure this week. Depending on what course you want to take, there should be something appeasing.

1) Winning a boatload of Oscars certainly helps things and no doubt The King's Speech is going to be on many a watch list. Despite my feelings that Social Network was robbed, I will get around to watching this some time in the future. Historic dramas aren't my …

Weekend Box Office: Rio Flys to the Top, Scream 4 Makes Only a Peep

Chris Kavan - wrote on 04/18/11 at 12:04 AM CT

Hollywood can finally notch a win compared to last year thanks to another animated hit. Rio opened in first place with $40 million, representing the best opening of 2011 so far and helping lift the overall box office 11% compared to last year.

While it's a good sign, Rio did benefit from hefty 3D sales, accounting for 58% of its gross and couldn't quite match the opening of How to Train Your …
